Little bear prepared for the end of the world

Este objeto —una pieza escultórica que aún conserva la memoria formal de un peluche infantil— ha sido sometido a un proceso de endurecimiento matérico. Jesús Lara Sotelo, como en tantas de sus obras, recurre aquí a lo que ya ha sido tocado por la vida. Pero esta vez no para rescatarlo, sino para declararlo irreparable.

Lo que vemos no es solo un peluche intervenido, sino la solidificación de un mecanismo defensivo. Es la cristalización de una defensa primitiva: “si lo destruyo yo, el otro no podrá hacerlo”.

El peluche está ahí, pero ya no es un juguete. Es una reliquia endurecida de la ternura pasada. En su superficie rugosa, metálica, se agolpan capas de abandono, furia, amor infantil encapsulado y lodo emocional.

Ya no sirve para abrazar. No puede ser apretado. No puede ser roto.

This object—a sculptural piece that still retains the formal memory of a child’s stuffed animal—has been subjected to a material hardening process. Jesús Lara Sotelo, as in so many of his works, here resorts to what has already been touched by life. But this time not to rescue it, but to declare it irreparable.

What we see is not just an altered stuffed animal, but the solidification of a defensive mechanism. It is the crystallization of a primitive defense: «If I destroy it, the other won’t be able to.»

The stuffed animal is there, but it is no longer a toy. It is a hardened relic of past tenderness. On its rough, metallic surface, layers of abandonment, fury, encapsulated childhood love, and emotional sludge accumulate.

It is no longer suitable for hugging. It cannot be squeezed. It cannot be broken.
